Tesla International Marketing Roadster Battery System

Question: Discuss about the Tesla International Marketing for Roadster Battery System. Answer: Introduction It is observed that the global automotive industry has been booming with success thus exhibiting great development and profitability. Further the aspect of non uniformity can be speculated in the global market. However the officials related to the automobile industry seem hopeful regarding the US market, especially about the North American market. The market researchers have estimated that the sales in the North American region are likely to rise from 13 million cars to 16 million cars within 2018. The auto sector of India is booming along with its fastest growing economy. Tesla Motors is a 13 year old American multinational company that excels in selling electric cars and other related car parts. This report will shed light on Teslas products and the market that the company can penetrate thereby assessing the companys business scenarios and strategies (Eberhard Tarpenning, 2006). Macro and Micro factors of automobile industry Thus with the increase in the number of automobiles, the want for the consumption of oil is also magnifying. Thus the new concept of the electric cars is filling up the space. The main macro factors behind the electric car industry are as follows: Due to the high consumption of oil and petroleum, the electric cars are notably being brought to existence As a result of manufacturing more electric cars, the electric car market will in turn be creating more jobs and a job market The electric automotive sector is estimated to upgrade the living standards of the humans connected The introduction of the electric cars in the market will certainly minimize the usage of foreign oil and thus its demand (Motors, 2011) For example, out of the total oil consumption in US, it is witnessed that around 70 % of the oil is utilized for transportation purposes. Further the passenger cars are creating the 70 % of oil consumption in the US. Again on the other hand, nations like India and china are also demanding more and more oil to the rising demand in their middle class segment of the society. Thus this may lead to the usage of almost 1.5 billion automobiles on the surface of the globe within 2050 which used to be 750 million during 2010. Hence, this sort of scenario calls for the manufacturing of electric cars and the advent of new and updated technologies (Motors, 2015). Nonetheless, the introduction of the electric automobiles in the global market will certainly create new job vacancies for the global population. This is because the new drive to updated technologies and its innovativeness will genuinely demand more and more workers which will in turn create jobs. Thus the manufacturing sectors, the technology segment, the research and development sector and others will require human resources that are to create job vacancies for the global population (Rohter, 2008). In order to switch on to new and upgraded technologies and the usage of electric automobiles the communities and societies at large must be well harnessed and equipped with knowledge to deal and drive with it. Thus it requires qualified and well informative persons to handle or buy the electric vehicles. Further the oil consumption will be minimized which again can be demonstrated as another form of living a better, healthy and quality life. It is further speculated that most of the countries have to buy oil and export it which displays the countrys money goes outside. Therefore the inception of electric automobiles can be instrumental in bringing down the level of money spent on foreign oil opined Martins et al. (2015). Added to this, there are certain micro factors that are affecting the inception of electric vehicles. It is speculated that the persons pertaining to the age group of 45 to 55 years are exhibiting interest to buy the electric cars. However, the cost and pricing of the electric automobiles are making them sceptical in taking decisions. However the consumers living in the urbanized zone have expressed awesome interest while it comes to buying the electric cars. There is also an assumption regarding the electric automobiles that sticks around the common buyers that these automobiles render less mileage and is favourable to run on small trips (Karamitsios, 2013). Physical evidence The physical evidence refers to the physical stores in this scenario. Tesla operates certain interactive stations along with its physical stores. The stores are located in the busiest places in US, Europe and Asia. The interactive stations introduced at the stores attract the consumers with their hi-tech and digitalized versions thus displaying the features and characteristics of the car (Rohter, 2008). Criteria for entry The criteria for entering the market has been its innovative green vehicle and selling of the car components. Another criterion for entering the market has been the companys plan to target the niche and affluent class of the global society who are more informed and aware regarding the environmental hazards. The master stroke of the company appears pretty innovative. Moreover the company makes electric cars without compromising anything. Joint Venture Toyota was into a joint venture with Tesla and invested $ 50 million to bring out its products that has Teslas green motor components. However, the joint venture does not exist now. It also got into ventures with Mercedes Benz A Class thereby manufacturing 500 automobiles only (Motors, 2011). Piggyback Piggyback marketing refers to less cost entry in the market. Teslas automobiles are very costly and thus it gets governmental subsidies. Moreover it also sought joint ventures to entry different markets. License Tesla is a starter in manufacturing the electric vehicle thereby boasting its car components. However, the business enterprise started in 2003 and operates in selective locations of Asia, Europe and US. It is still looking forward to get its licenses for other nations like India, Singapore, Michigan, and North Carolina and so on (Luthra et al. 2011). Contract Tesla went into contract with few companies such as Toyota who invested $ 50 million. It also went into contract with Dailmer and Mercedes Benz. Presently it is noted that the company might enter into contract with the LG to put LG displays on its Sedan products (Martins et al. 2015). Tesla exports Tesla has been found to export its Model S car in several destinations like Netherlands, China, Hong Kong, Belgium and so on in the year 2014. Entry Mode Tesla inputs an innovative strategy for its entry mode. The innovative strategy is its manufacturing of green cars. Moreover it gets government subsidies for its green products. It uses international strategic alliance to entry any new market (Rohter, 2008). Choice of countries based on 12 Cs The apt choice of the country on the basis of 12Cs is India as all the situations pertaining to the 12 elements seem favourable. Barriers to entry Teslas barriers to entry are its high pricing strategy and its cost to manufacture green cars. Nonetheless, it receives subsidies for its production (Klepper, 2007) Tesla Motors internal business factors In order to analyze the internal business aspects of any prevailing organization, a SWOT analysis can be performed which will assess the internal environment of the company as well as determine its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Tesla Motors is a multinational American company that produces as well as designs high end automobiles including electric cars (Mangram, 2012). The SWOT analysis of Tesla is as follows: Strengths The best characteristics that Tesla electric cars possess are its energy efficient feature. It is observed that the automobile make use of the renewable energy like solar energy. Strength of the company is that it is a much acknowledged supplier for motor parts to other companies. For example, Toyota is one of its customers who buy the machinery parts from Tesla. Moreover the company shares an excellent rapport with several steady investors such as the Google, Panasonic, Daimler as well as the Toyota Motors (Hafner Tomlin, 2006). Weakness The car company is seen to come up with a new model which has been termed as the model X but has been acknowledged to be pretty expensive. This has been one of the reasons to drive away the consumers from buying it. Another aspect of its weakness is that the company takes lot of time to deliver the desired product towards its targeted consumers. This is because of its limited production capability. Another scenario that can be counted as its weakness is that the business enterprise holds an enormous debt of around $ 455 million which is shown as negative cash flow in its financial statement thus making the position of the business enterprise quite vulnerable. Tesla does not possess too much experience in the global market while compared to its competitors such as General Motors, Toyota and others (Rohter, 2008). Opportunities However when it comes to opportunities the business enterprise surely have great opportunities in the market due to its advanced usage of technology and manufacturing of the electric automobiles. Another point is that the global community is seemed to become more conscious about the environmental hazards and the problems that the fuel automobiles create. This will create a different revolution all together for the demand of electric cars in the global market. Again on the contrary it is noted that various nations like US provides subsidies for the manufacturing and selling of electric automobiles in the market (Martins et al. 2015). Threats One of the threats that can be counted while viewing the companys scenario is that the models and the electric automobiles of the business enterprise are too expensive to be afforded by the common mass of the global society. Another threat is that the company gets from its competitors. Moreover the number of competitors giving stiff competition to the business enterprise has also magnified considerably. For example Volkswagen is giving a stiff completion to the company Tesla (Klepper, 2007). Evaluation of the automotive industry market It has also been discussed earlier that the automotive industry corresponding to the global market is non uniform in nature. The notable shifts to be traced pertaining to the demand of the consumers, extended regulations and requirements in order to maintain the safety and the corresponding fuel economy relating to fuel as well as the magnified amount of data and information collected. The point that there is a certain shift in the demands generated from the consumers are driving the automotive companies to engineer new and updated technical products and cars so that they are able to cater in a batter way to the needs of the consumers. Here comes the aspect of product differentiation and that is the part that most of the companies are trying to implement and deliver to their targeted consumers. This calls for the inception for the electric cars in the market (Luthra et al. 2011). There are certain strategies abiding by the CAF (Corporate average fuel economy) coined by the US are found to be difficult and tight to follow while it comes to the OEM (original equipment manufacturers) and thus it increases their overall cost. This can be another reason to come up with the electric cars. Along with the advent of the technology, there are more data and information that can now be accumulated so that the buyers are able to get a good hand over comparing the prices, features and the technology offered by the car companies. Moreover the buyers are able to communicate with the other fellow consumers or the car users which certainly provide a good deal of knowledge before buying. Thus the bargaining power of the consumers relating to the automobile industry has increased (Bhaumick Driffield, 2010). There are quite a few booming automotive industry sectors like US, China, Europe and others. However the automotive industry of India is growing with a faster pace and so the economy of India. Recommended market for Tesla- India Presently the Indian automotive sector and the market is considered to be one of the booming markets all over the globe and is the centre of attraction for the KPMG ventures. This is because the economy of India has also considerably possessed a strong and robust position in the world economy chapter. One of the significant reasons to this aspect is that the present Indian government, the NDA government is inviting lots of foreign proposals and promoting foreign direct investments. Presently the Indian government is adding a lot of initiatives to its automobile sector in order to promote the green vehicles and the green technology. The annual growth rate of the Indian automobile sector is estimated to be 19 %. Moreover the nation plans to manufacture 5 million more vehicles for its consumers towards the closing of the year 2016 (Motors, 2011). Undoubtedly, the 5 million figures will be transformed into 10 million cars manufactured at the end of 2020 which will certainly provide a great mileage to Tesla Motors to operate its business and earn certain amount of profit. Thus these are the favourable conditions that Tesla might enjoy if it explores the Indian market. Recommended market entry strategy for Tesla It is recommended that the business enterprise follows the foreign direct investment as India is encouraging it. India is witnessed to apply the make in India move through which many foreign companies are invited to invest money and resources thereby manufacturing and producing products in India and exporting to other nations from India. Nonetheless this strategy appears to be encouraging for the Tesla Motors as it can invest money and start its own manufacturing plant in India thereby creating jobs for many Indians (Rohter, 2008). It is speculated that the transport minister of India, Nitin Gadkari is looking forward to Teslas investment thereby giving the privilege to the company for setting up its biggest plant within Asia. Well there are few brands that have introduced the electric cars or the hybrid cars in the Indian market. They are the Mahindra, Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, BMW and so on. Thus the Indian crowd is not absolutely unknown to the concept and the idea of running electric cars which acts as an added advantage for the company Tesla because it will not be the first driver of the concept (Luthra et al. 2011). Recommendations to Teslas marketing mix The marketing mix tool comprises of the 4 Ps that is the product, price, promotion and place. Product Owing to the product variant, it is comprehended that the company must sell its electric cars in the Indian market as it does in other markets. Moreover the company might introduce the concept of free charging for its electric cars which might gain in more consumers thereby acting as an added value to the variant (Luthra et al. 2011). Place When it comes to place, India seems to be the most appropriate country where the company can pinpoint the busiest and costliest places of India to run the show. For example, the places like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru can be the favourable places to open the stores (Berdichevsky et al. 2006). Promotion When its promotion is concerned the company can actually club with the Indian government to promote its business and its manufacturing plant in India. Moreover the company can endorse celebrity figures and do advertisements on its products (Bhaumik Driffield, 2010). Price The price that the company sets for its buyers need to be competitive which is at par with the other competitive brands. Moreover owing to its costly products, the company can target the niche segment of the Indian society like the political leaders, celebrities, sports persons and other Indian industrialists (Mangram, 2012). Conclusion Thus to conclude, it can be stated that India seems a favourable spot for the Tesla Motors to perform its venture. Owing to the fast growing Indian economy and its respective car market, Tesla like other automotive companies such as general Motors can also utilize the situation and earn good profits out of a good deal (Klepper, 2007). The Next Generation In The NBA Essays - , Term Papers

The Next Generation in the NBA Eventually, the NBA's brightest stars will fade from the sky. Great players come and go. Most new players wait, ready to carry on their tradition. Wilt Chamberlain and Russell were 2 of the best centers the game has ever seen. Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson and Jerry West were the smoothest guards in the 50's and 60's. Earl ?The Pearl? Monroe and Walt Frazier dazzled fans in the 70's. The 80's, of course, belonged to Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. The next generation is now ready to step into the spotlight. The exciting young players I've chosen have only been in the NBA a few years, but have made their presence known. Damon Staudamire and Grant Hill are the Next Generation in the NBA. On Damon Staudamire's right arm is a tattoo of mightymouse clutching a basketball. It is an appropriate symbol. Damon, the 5'10'' point guard for the Toronto Raptors, is a small kid in a big man's world. But size hasn't stopped him from accomplishing big things. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year after the 1995-96 season. Like his favorite cartoon character, Damon knows that size is not everything. ?A lot of people think that being short is a disadvantage, but I don't see it that way? (Benagh, 71.) Damon Staudamire was born on September 3, 1973, in Portland, Oregon. His father, Willie, had played college ball at Portland State. And the Detroit Lions had drafted his uncle. It's no surprise that one of his heroes was Nate Archibald, a 6'0'' guard who's nickname was ?Tiny.? Damon is even smaller than tiny. But he has proved that basketball is not just a game for giants. If a player is quick and smart he'll be good. At Wilson High School Damon was captain of the varsity basketball team. ?As a senior he averaged 26.1 points and 9.0 assists (Benagh, 72.) He was named Oregon player of the year and led his team to the state championship. In college Damon was also very impressive. He led the University of Arizona to the final four in just his junior year. As a senior he averaged 22.8 points and 7.3 assists (Sporting News, www.sportingnews.com.) He was a first-team All America. Damon carries 171 pounds on his muscular frame. He may be short, but he is not weak. And he happens to be one of the quickest guards in the NBA. He reminds many fans of Isiah Thomas, a 6'1'' fantastic guard of the 80's. Isiah was the executive vice president of the Raptors. ?We're here to work toward winning a title, that's one of the reasons we wanted Damon,?(Benagh, 79) say's Thomas, ?He's a show all by himself, watching Damon makes you want to jump up and holler? (Damon Staudamire Online, www.geocities.com) Before he entered the NBA, some of Damon's critics said he couldn't run an offense. They felt he was a scorer, not a passer. But he proved that he could do both. Damon averaged 19 points and 9.3 assists in his rookie season (Benagh, 75). He is only going to get better as his career progresses. By the end of his rookie season, he led all rookies in steals, assists, and minutes played. He had 30 points in one game. In another he had 19 assists. ?I think I definitely got better as the year went on, but you know there's a lot of room for improvement? (Layden, 37.) Grant Hill has always been a step ahead of the crowd. Even when he didn't want to be. As a freshman in high school, he was 6'6'' and 165 pounds. The coach asked him to try out for the varsity basketball team thinking he would be honored. Grant broke down and cried. ?I didn't want to jump over my friends,? Grant remembers, ?I just wanted to be liked. I didn't want to seem better than everybody else?(Layden, 15). A lot has changed since Grant was a shy 14-year?old. Now he is comfortable with being the best. The now 6'8'' forward for the Detroit Pistons shared NBA rookie of the year honors with Jason Kidd of the Mavericks in 1995. Next year he was named to the All-NBA Second Team. And

buy custom The Role of Social Work essay

buy custom The Role of Social Work essay Social work, also a social science, is a relatively new discipline that is still evolving. Various scholars have defined it in different terms. According to Llewellyn, Lorraine and Mercer (2008 p. 1), social work is a contested area that has evolved within the wider political, economic, policy and social context in the social sciences. Among the definitions for social work is, social work is a socially constructed phenomenon...defined by the economic, social and cultural conditions in which it takes place, (Llewellym, Agu Mercer, 2008, p 1). This definition puts emphasis on the uniqueness of societies across the world; therefore each society has its form of social work taking place. The uniqueness in societies has seen social work evolve in different forms found in different societies. This divergent forms of social work are seen in the way different societies defines social care within the domain of their cultures. Llewellyn (2008) insists that it is a necessity that social workers understand the social conditions and processes within the context of the society. This denotes that different social workers have different roles defined by the groups they are working in, but the underlying aspect is that, they all work for the improvement of the society. The International Association of Schools of Social Work, 2001, defines the role of social work as the promotion of social change, problem solving in human relations, and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance their well being. This definition is closely linked to the earlier one as they are all centred on the improvement of the society in a defined way. Beckett (2006, p 12) in his definition of social work also emphasizes on the uniqueness of society and the changing roles of the social worker dependent on the problems in the society. He emphasizes on the role of control and coordination as unique to social work so as to help the members of a society attain their potentials. Social care, provided for by the government and other key agents of development such as non-governmental organizations, and the private sector is important for the well being of the society as a whole. Many people across the world cannot cater for their social care needs; hence rely on free social care services provided for by the government. This is all in the realm of social work. Social work is closely linked to sociology with many people confusing the two terms (Llewellym, Agu Mercer, 2008, p. 2). Social work has evolved within the discipline of sociology, but has ended up taking a role and significance of its own, such that it is considered as an independent discipline from sociology. Much as sociology emphasizes on understanding the dynamics of society with an emphasis on social science research, social work tends to take a more practical approach in tackling the problems that arise within societies. The two disciplines borrow a lot from each other, especially in the theoretical aspects and research. Social work is dynamic and keeps evolving to take in to account the changing needs of society (Jorrin, 1973). As the problems being encountered by members of society change with the development of new technologies that have enabled people to be in contact at a level never seen before, social work has been changing to take this new development in to perspective. Originally social work entailed tackling societal problems as they arose, such as substance abuse, child welfare and sexual abuse. This was done without much involvement of the society as a whole, but the social workers took it up on themselves to be the community watchdogs. Overtime time this has changed to facilitating the elimination of such problem with empowerment of the community to develop their capacity to tackle the problems without much assistance from outsiders (Beckett, 2006). Social workers have changed their roles to that of facilitators where they work on the improvement of the societies ability to tackle social problems (Llewellym, Agu Mercer, 2008, 2008). This is achieved through the use of research methods and statistics to collect relevant information that would help the social workers understand the dynamics of particular societies. The information gathered helps in the generation of techniques and tools necessary to alleviate the problems. Social work needs to have relevance of sociological perspectives in understanding societal and structural influences on human behaviour (Llewellym, Agu Mercer, 2008, p. 5). This enables the social worker to get better collaboration from the members of society. Every society has opinion leaders and leadership structures that influence the activities of the members. Such leaders can provide massive assistance to the social worker if they are adequately involved in decision making, and creating awareness in the society. Social work tries to understand and explain the links between definition processes contributing to social differences; problems of inequality and differential needs (Llewellym, Agu Mercer, 2008, p. 5). In tackling problems such as child abuse, social workers need to have an understanding of the way culture has contributed to the continuity of the vice over time, and whether there are any mechanisms to stop the continuity of the vice. In so doing, social work plays a role of trying to formulate solutions from the structure of the society, while at the same time using the members of the society to tackle the problems they are facing. This will lead to a situation where cultural and social changes occur, a necessary condition in overcoming the problems once and for all. Apart from problem solving, social work plays a fundamental role in human empowerment and liberation as stated in IASSW (2001). The human potential is unimaginable, but largely remains unfulfilled. This is as a result of lack of opportunities and knowledge on how to use this potential. Social work plays a pivotal role in the fulfilment of such potentials by engaging in empowerment campaigns that highlight the opportunities open to members of society. Closely linked to empowerment and a major role of social work, is the role of creating cultural and social changes in societies. This is a necessity in societies who hold fatalistic beliefs such as female suicide and child abuse. Social work serves the role of being the agent of change in such societies, a slow and tedious task. Beckett (2006), talks of the role of social workers as the control agents, this is the regulation and enforcement of behaviour change with the aim of protecting the vulnerable from being harmed or harming themselves. This distinguishes social work from other disciplines in the social sciences. Control agents provide mechanisms for members of society with guidelines on how to lead a fulfilling life. The presence of social workers acts as a deterrence to the people (Beckett, 2006 p. 12), who would otherwise have engaged in dangerous activities which could be harmful to others. Social work also serves the role of coordination (Beckett, 2006, p. 13), especially when working in a multidisciplinary environment. Unlike care management which regulates the activities of a multi-disciplinary team, social work coordinates the activities of other professionals, so as to be in line with societal needs. This assists the society as a whole, as the team works with the objective of improving the condition of the socciety as a whole. Much as social work serves important roles in societies, it has been faced by a number of challenges that have hampered its roles of improving the human conditions, as discussed below. Many people view social work as performing the role of care takers when the society faces a breakdown. There is some truth in this assumption, but it ends up leading people to view social workers as the solution to problems that could otherwise have been solved in the community. Beresford (2007) asserts that the over reliance on social work sometimes leads to a breakdown in the community, as people wait on the social workers to provide every form of social care. This problem can be tackled through education and empowerment of the people, this is in order to change their worldview and reduce dependency on social care. This will create a sense of responsibility within societies, which is beneficial for the people in the long run. Some people attach stigma to getting assistance from social workers, where people look down upon members of society receiving social care from the government. This leads to a situation where people fail to air their grievances and bottle up their problems, resulting to a condition detrimental to society such as increase in suicide cases. The belief that things need to be critical before the intervention of social workers is a widely held belief. Many people assume that social workers only intervene when there is an emergency, thus fear to be associated with the activities of social work, lest they be prejudiced by members of society. Fatalistic beliefs held by various cultural groups have undermined the importance and effectiveness of social work (Beckett, 2006, p. 24). Such beliefs are usually hard to change and more often they act as inhibitors to growth and development. Social workers sometimes are viewed with suspicion and hatred, especially when they attempt to influence culture change where fatalistic beliefs have created obstacles to progress. Conclusion Social work is a relatively new field of study that has evolved within the social sciences and closely linked to sociology. The IASSW (2001) explains that social work utilizes theories of human behaviour and social systems to intervene at points where people interact with their environment. This is more fundamental when such interactions become injurious to the people or the environment. Social work serves the roles of controlling and coordinating social care and other development programmes in close collaboration with experts from other disciplines, all with the aim of improving the human condition. The changing role of social work lies in the structure of the discipline, which views communities as unique entities with different problems and needs. Social work puts emphasis on the need to develop social care programmes with the unique needs of different people in mind. This ensures that each members need is taken in to account and does not lead to the exclusion of some members. Social work differs from other social sciences as it has increasingly changed to accommodate the indigenous communities and the most vulnerable members of society in decision-making processes. This accommodation brings a sense of importance within the society and serves the role of empowerment. It can be conclusively stated that social work puts an emphasis on people centred development, where the major aim is in empowering people to be their own actors of development. This is achieved through the enhancement of peoples capabilities and potentials by increasing their choices in life. This makes it an important discipline in the pursuit of development by many societies. Buy custom The Role of Social Work essay

Quantitative Methods - Assignment Example Therefore, someone seeks to unveil the relationship between the variables. This relationship can assume a status of being positive, negative or null. Positive relationship encompasses denotations as (+ve), Negative by (–ve) and null by (0) (Asuero & Bueno 2011: p.45). Zero exuberates that there exists extremely no relationship between the variables. Correlation thus becomes useful when trying to gauge relations of sales for the business. Quantitative regression outdoes correlation because of the information of ease in predictions. Graphs entailing reliant and independent variables produce lines of finest fit (Twomey& Kroll, 2008: P.531). The best-fit precisions enable the company to explore in proliferating merchandise encompassing required exactitude in the marketplace. One indisputable importance of the quantitative techniques would be information that aid in estimation of variables. For instance, sales exemplify a variable that counts most to a firm. Therefore, sales made at instances denote undeviating or indirect correlation to matters of taste, earnings, and cost. Attention to these matters leads to improved sales because of greater quality (Parasumaran.et.al, 2007: P 345). Regression entails the importance of exemplifying trend within certain durations. Therefore, this helps in keeping the trend in sales through revising production. Evaluating trends ensures that there entails observance to current precisions involving customers. The depiction of such trends ensures that focus is paramount in firms. Regression technique also exemplifies effectiveness of advertising performed to a certain product.

Work experience at an Alzheimers center Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 210

Work experience at an Alzheimers center - Essay Example I personally bore witness to many of the individuals who were suffering from it but these individuals were strong enough to face their problems. While I worked in the center I observed that the patients were normally aware of the condition they were suffering from. But these individuals could not cope up with it when the disease worsened and I primarily took care of the individuals who were in the latter stages of the disease. During my work, I helped these individuals from whatever time they woke up and gave a hand to the healthcare professionals in handling the patients. The patients usually forgot who they were and they needed someone to show enough care to them. I acted as that one person and stayed with them for long in accordance with the schedule formed by the center itself. The most intriguing task of all was to talk to these patients, during which I observed that these individuals were otherwise normal human beings who would co-relate different aspects of their life with the current life they were living in. A specific schedule was set up during which these patients were asked to indulge in different exercises so that it could help their brain to work accordingly. They were given specific tasks which they had to fulfill and I was always around them to help them with these tasks. I helped these individuals carry out their tasks which included eating, exercising and games. I also realized that some of the patients were extremely talented but their disease had slowed them down. A patient who was suffering from Alzheimer's once made me ask him mathematical questions and to my wonder he answered almost every question that I asked. In the end, I also helped the patients to get in bed so that they could sleep healthy and wake up to a new tomorrow. I also helped in the kitchen so that these patients were able to have healthy food in accordance with their daily food requirement.

Piaget And Vygotsky Were Both Considered Constructivists Education Essay

Piaget And Vygotsky Were Both Considered Constructivists Education Essay Piaget and Vygotsky were both considered constructivists. Constructivism is a theory of teaching and learning based on the idea that cognition is developed through mental construction. This suggests that humans learn, constructing new knowledge by piecing together their past experiences. Another similarity between Piaget and Vygotsky is that they both believe societal influences establish the boundaries of cognitive growth. The main ideas in Piagets and Vygotskys theories regarding intelligence differ. According to Piaget, intelligence was a product of action. He believed that children learn by interaction with their surrounding and that such learnings occur after development. Vygotsky however, believed that learning occurs before development can and that a child learns because of history and symbolism. Vygotsky also thought that children appreciate input from their surroundings as well as other people. Piaget on the other hand did not place any importance on the input of others. Piaget and Vygotskys theories regarding the stages of development have differing opinions as well. Piagets theory of cognitive development is made up of four stages which mark the emergence of new intellectual abilities. The earliest stage is the sensorimotor stage, which occurs between birth and two years of age. During this stage babies and young children use their senses and motor skills to explore the world. Through physical activity and somewhat accidental motor reflexes intelligence is manifested. Toward the end of this stage children also acquire the concept of object permanence, meaning that they understand an object is there even if the child cannot see it. The next stage in Piagets theory is known as the preoperational stage. This occurs during ages two through seven. During this stage a childs language and concepts develop rapidly, however their thinking process is still rather primitive. In this stage characteristics such as centration occur, which leaves the child so focused on one aspect of a situation that they fail to see other important factors. Another characteristic is that children are egocentric. They believe that everyone thinks, or has the same needs and desires as they do. The third stage in Piagets theory is the concrete operational stage, occurring between the ages of seven and eleven. During this stage children begin to experience a drastic change in their thinking process. Their thoughts become less egocentric and more logical. Reversibility, the ability to perform a mental operation and then reverse ones thinking to return to the starting point (Slavin, 2003, p.33) occurs during this stage. Children at this stage still have difficulty with abstract thought. The last stage in Piagets cognitive development theory is identified as the formal operational stage. It is during this stage in which a child begins to develop abstract and symbolic thoughts. It allows hypothetical situations to be addressed, and problem solving through experimentation. This development gives young adults the ability to reason their way through situations they have not yet experienced. As discussed Piagets theory has four specific stages, however Vygotsky believed that there are no set stages. The first aspect of Vygotskys theory is a mechanism referred to as private speech, talking to oneself. Vygotsky found that it was important to turn shared knowledge into person knowledge. He believed that children would integrate the speech of others into their problem solving process. Private speech is commonly seen amongst young children who talk to themselves openly and often. In adulthood private speech is also very important, although it become silent and internalized it is still a helpful problem solving tool. Vygotskys belief of the zone of proximal development is the second part of his cognitive theory. A zone of proximal development is the level of development immediately above a persons present level (Slavin, 2003, p.44). The zone of proximal development consists of things a child cannot quite do alone, but could accomplish with help from a more experienced child or an adult. It includes tasks a child has not yet learned but is capable of learning. Vygotsky believed that to achieve maximum learning it was important to work with the zone of proximal development. The final idea in Vygotskys cognitive development theory is scaffolding. This includes using encouragement, clues, reminders and assistance in the form of suggestion to aid the child in independently learning. By learning to solve problems independently and without the help of others, the child gains the ability to self-regulate. Both Piaget and Vygotskys cognitive development theories have had an impact on education practices and classroom management. Piagets theory is used in classrooms daily with the use of developmentally appropriate education. Another example of Piagetian theory being used in the classroom is through hands on activities. According to Piaget, young children (preoperational) learn through their actions and are not capable of abstract thought, therefore providing a variety of physical activities for smaller children is essential to any classroom schedule. Aspects of Vygotskys cognitive theory are also found in many classroom settings. An example is a classroom which has the children divided into groups, or tables. This uses Vygotskys ideas regarding use of the zone of proximal development as well as scaffolding. By placing children of varying developmental abilities together for group work, children have the ability to mentor and learn from each other through scaffolding, as well as work in their zone of proximal development. It is clear that cognitive development theories play an important role in addressing the educational needs and learning methods of children of varying stages. Through the theories provided by Piaget and Vygotsky it is possible to create a better classroom experience for not only the student but the teacher as well. When a teacher uses methods to teach children developmentally appropriate material, it makes for a more enjoyable and conducive learning environment. Thanks to such psychologists as Piaget and Vygotsky, teachers today have the tools available to them to create such an environment.

Velociraptors: Fact and Fiction Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research P

Velociraptors: Fact and Fiction Eventually at some time or another, somebody has to imagine what a dinosaur looks like. Maybe it is a Paleontologist, maybe it is an Artist, maybe it is a Movie Maker. Basically, everyone is entitled to deciding in his or her mind what a dinosaur may look like. How do we form these ideas, though? And on what information are these ideas based on? The â€Å"picture† of the dinosaur – whether it’s in our mind, on paper or a motion picture film – helps us to understand how these animals behaved. Ideas about how dinosaurs looked have changed over the years as our research improves. There’s a sort of partnership between paleontology, painting and movies: they help to define each other. The paleontologist digs up the bones, the artist paints a painting, and the filmmaker brings it to â€Å"life.† Then everyone complains about how silly the movie dinosaurs look (or do they?) and little by little, things improve. Since movies are the venue through which most of society gains its ideas of what dinosaurs look like, it seems appropriate to address the topic of how dinosaurs are depicted on the big screen and whether or not those depictions are correct. Some of the most popular film portrayals of dinosaurs are the Jurassic Park movies. The dinosaurs shown seem to be actually living and partaking in all of the activities shown – everything from the opening of doors, running 50 miles per hour, the elaborate hunting tactics, to tapping their toes, everything is incredibly realistic. Or is it? According to a website known as Dino Buzz, which is an offshoot of a UC Berkeley site, many of the portrayals of the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park III were inaccurate; some ideas wer... ... what Velociraptors were like – for the most part. It allows the audience to form thoughts and ideas about how these animals might have moved, hunted, etc. Of course, as in all movies, the â€Å"facts† presented should not be taken as the absolute truth. Only science can determine whether or not a Velociraptor could move at 50 miles per hour, open doors, or tap its toe – not Steven Spielberg.
